Pibbly is a play-based early numeracy program for children aged 3 to 6, running in early learning centres, kindergartens and schools across Brisbane and South East Queensland. Children use a child-friendly soroban to explore numbers, counting and early mathematical thinking through hands-on play.

Children aged 3 to 6. Most abacus programs start at five or six. Pibbly starts at three, which is two years before school, because that is when a child can hold a bead, follow a two-step instruction and stay with something that interests them.

Three is where it should start. By three, children are already sorting, stacking and matching, which is the thinking maths is built on. The one thing they do not have yet is a way to see a quantity. We are not asking a three-year-old to calculate. We are handing them something to think with, two years before anyone asks them to.

Sessions run in small groups of up to eight children, so every child gets time with the teacher and their own soroban.

A soroban is a Japanese-style abacus. Pibbly uses a child-friendly single-rod version to help children physically see and move numbers. The top bead represents 5 and each bottom bead represents 1. Children learn that beads touching the bar are counted.

No. A child does not need to know any numbers before starting Pibbly. Pibbly is designed to meet children where they are, so some begin with counting and number recognition while others are ready for adding, taking away or early mental maths concepts.

Pibbly is not formal tutoring. It is a playful early numeracy program designed for young children. The focus is confidence, curiosity and hands-on number exploration.

Yes, Pibbly sessions are play-based throughout. They are designed around play, movement, stories, songs, hands-on counting and short activities, so maths feels safe, joyful and achievable rather than like a lesson.

Children aged 3 to 5 attend 30-minute sessions. Children aged 6 attend 45-minute sessions.

Children aged 3 to 5 are $20 per session, billed as $80 per 4-session block. Children aged 6 are $25 per session, billed as $100 per 4-session block.

Parents pay Pibbly directly. Centres provide the space and help arrange suitable session times, but enrolments and payments are managed by Pibbly.

Each enrolled child receives a Pibbly bag, child-friendly abacus/soroban, Pibbly shirt and workbook/learning portfolio.

Pibbly does not use pressure-based homework. Children may receive simple “home play” or “little practice ripples” so families can continue the learning through playful moments at home.

Missed sessions are not refunded, but families may request a make-up session where availability allows. Please request changes at least 24 hours before the scheduled session whenever possible.

If a child is unwell and misses a Pibbly session, families may request a make-up session where availability allows. Missed sessions are not refunded, but we will do our best to help the child catch up.

If a session is affected by a public holiday or centre closure, Pibbly will work with families and centres to arrange a suitable make-up session where availability allows.

Yes, a Pibbly booking can be changed. Contact Pibbly and we will help with any change, depending on available sessions and your centre's arrangements. Please give at least 24 hours' notice where you can.

No, children do not move through the Pibbly workbooks at the same speed. Every child starts with Workbook 1 and progresses at their own pace. Some move quickly, others need more time, and Pibbly celebrates progress rather than pressure.

Pibbly introduces the early foundations of soroban thinking in an age-appropriate way. For younger children, the focus is mainly hands-on number recognition, counting and confidence. Mental arithmetic concepts can develop gradually as children grow and progress.

Pibbly is designed to complement play-based early childhood practice and can be linked to early numeracy, mathematical language, confidence, communication and problem-solving.

If the session is held at a childcare centre or kindy, parents usually do not need to attend. The session happens during the centre day at a time arranged with the centre.

Moreton Bay, Logan, Ipswich and Redlands are available by arrangement. If a suburb is not listed it usually means nobody there has asked yet, so it is worth asking.

No. Pibbly runs inside early learning centres, kindergartens and schools, during the centre day. There is no venue to drive to and no home visiting, because the whole model depends on the session happening somewhere the child already is, with children they already play with.

Pibbly starts at three rather than five or six, runs inside the child's own centre rather than at a separate venue, and does not teach mental arithmetic or run competitions. Programs like UCMAS are franchised abacus mental-arithmetic courses aimed at school-age children and built around speed and calculation. Pibbly is play-based early numeracy: the goal is that a young child can see what a number is, not that they can add quickly.

No. Pibbly is a single small Brisbane business, and every session is delivered in person by its founder, a qualified early childhood teacher. There is no roster of contractors and no licensee network, which is why the service area is Brisbane and the surrounding councils rather than the whole country.

A soroban is a specific kind of abacus, the Japanese one. Each rod holds one bead above a bar worth five and four beads below it worth one each, and only beads touching the bar are counted. That is different from the Chinese suanpan, which has two beads above and five below, and from the ten-bead-per-row frames common in classrooms, where a child still has to count the beads one at a time.

Children progress through the Pibbly workbooks at their own pace rather than as a class, so a child who finds it easy keeps moving rather than waiting. Being ahead in counting also does not always mean a child understands quantity, and the soroban tends to reveal that quickly either way.

Often, yes. Sessions are hands-on, short, repetitive and non-verbal in large part, which suits many children who find worksheet-based or heavily verbal learning difficult.
